Smile Makeover

What Is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover is a personalised combination of cosmetic and restorative dental treatments, planned together to transform the appearance of your smile. There is no single definition — for some patients it means whitening and composite bonding in a single appointment; for others it means a coordinated plan spanning orthodontics, veneers, implants, and gum contouring over several months.

What makes Conway House particularly well placed to deliver smile makeovers is the breadth of expertise available in-house. Our team includes cosmetic dentists with advanced training in smile design, alongside GDC-registered specialists in Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontics, and Oral Surgery. This means that whatever your smile goals require — from the simplest to the most complex — can be planned and delivered under one roof, with every treatment coordinated around a single outcome.

Composite Bonding: Transforming Smiles in a Single Visit

Cosmetic bonding can be used on a single tooth or to transform an entire smile. It is a simple technique that allows tooth-coloured composite resin to bond directly to the natural tooth — usually without the need to prepare or reshape the tooth — and is completed in one short visit. An anaesthetic is not usually required, which means you can leave the practice smiling with confidence immediately.

An artistic eye is essential to produce natural, seamless results, and our smile design dentists have trained extensively in this technique, transforming many smiles across Marlow, Beaconsfield and High Wycombe.

Your composite bonding procedure should last several years, depending on your lifestyle. Smoking, drinking staining liquids, or using your teeth as tools can reduce its longevity, and an annual polish appointment helps keep it looking its best, as composite stains more readily than natural enamel.

The Full Range of Smile Makeover Treatments

A smile makeover at Conway House can draw on any combination of the following, sequenced in the order that achieves the best clinical and aesthetic result:

Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening is almost always the starting point of a smile makeover — or happens immediately before the final cosmetic stage, so that any restorations are shade-matched to a brightened smile. We offer Enlighten and White Dental Beauty systems, both of which deliver predictable, natural-looking results through custom-made home whitening trays. Whitening is planned first so that the shade of any crowns, veneers, or bonding is matched to your brightened natural teeth rather than their starting colour.

Composite Bonding

A versatile, conservative option for reshaping teeth, closing gaps, repairing chips, and evening out edges. Bonding is completed chairside in a single appointment, requires no tooth preparation in most cases, and can produce dramatic results at a relatively modest investment. It is the most accessible entry point for a smile makeover and is ideal for patients whose teeth are healthy and well-aligned but lack the shape or surface they want.

Porcelain Veneers

Where bonding is not sufficient — for example where significant changes in tooth length, shape, or colour are needed, or where durability under heavier biting forces matters — porcelain veneers offer a more permanent solution. A thin layer of tooth structure is removed to accommodate the veneer, which is then custom-fabricated in ceramic to match the exact shade, shape, and translucency of natural teeth. The result is highly aesthetic and long-lasting. At Conway House, veneer cases that involve multiple teeth or require careful bite consideration are overseen by our Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Mr Ashok Vijayakumar.

Teeth Straightening

Alignment is the foundation of any great smile. Composite bonding or veneers placed on crooked or misaligned teeth require more tooth reduction, look less natural, and carry greater long-term risk. Straightening first — with Invisalign clear aligners or fixed braces — creates the optimal canvas for cosmetic work and often reduces the number of teeth that need treating. Dr Helen Veeroo, our Consultant and Specialist Orthodontist, works alongside the cosmetic team to sequence orthodontic and cosmetic treatment for the best combined result.

Crowns

Where a tooth has been significantly damaged by decay, fracture, or wear, a crown provides both protection and a natural aesthetic result. In the context of a smile makeover, crowns are used where veneers or bonding cannot provide sufficient coverage or structural support — typically for heavily restored or root-treated teeth. Mr Vijayakumar, our Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, designs and places crowns for smile makeover cases where specialist precision is required.

Dental Implants

Missing teeth are one of the most common reasons patients seek a smile makeover. Where a gap exists, a dental implant — a titanium root placed in the jawbone, topped with a custom crown — is the most natural-looking and long-lasting solution. Implant placement at Conway House is performed by Mr Dipesh Patel, our Consultant Oral Surgeon, with the implant crown designed and fitted by Mr Vijayakumar, our Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, so that it integrates seamlessly with the surrounding cosmetic work.

Gum Contouring and Periodontal Aesthetics

An uneven gumline — sometimes called a “gummy smile” — can make even well-shaped teeth look disproportionate. Gum contouring reshapes the gum margin to create a more balanced, symmetrical frame for the teeth. At Conway House, this is performed by Dr Mital Patel, our Specialist in Periodontics, who also ensures that any gum disease or recession affecting the appearance of the smile is treated as part of the overall plan. Healthy, well-contoured gums are the frame that makes the rest of the smile work.

Getting the Sequence Right

The order in which smile makeover treatments are carried out matters enormously. The wrong sequence can mean redoing work, compromising results, or creating clinical problems that are expensive to resolve. At Conway House, every smile makeover begins with a thorough consultation and a clear treatment plan that sequences each element correctly.

The typical approach is:

  • Address any underlying oral health issues first — gum disease, decay, and failing restorations must be treated before any cosmetic work begins.
  • Orthodontics, where needed — straightening before cosmetic work reduces the intervention required and improves the final outcome.
  • Any surgical treatment — implants or gum contouring — is carried out and allowed to heal.
  • Teeth whitening — completed before final restorations are shade-matched.
  • Final cosmetic work — bonding, veneers, or crowns — placed last, matched to the whitened shade and the straightened alignment.

This sequence is not always the same for every patient. Your plan will be tailored to your clinical situation and your priorities, with a clear explanation of what each stage involves and why.

The Specialist Team Behind Your Smile

What separates a smile makeover at Conway House from a purely cosmetic clinic is the depth of clinical expertise available in-house. Cosmetic work that is placed without considering the underlying bite, gum health, and structural integrity of the teeth may look beautiful initially but is more likely to fail or require replacement sooner. Our specialists ensure the cosmetic result is built on sound foundations.

  • Restorative Dentistry — Mr Ashok Vijayakumar (M.Pros RCS Eng, FDS RestDent RCS Eng): specialist oversight for veneer and crown cases, implant-supported restorations, and full-mouth rehabilitation. His involvement is particularly important where the smile makeover includes significant bite changes or multiple restorations that need to work together as a system.
  • Orthodontics — Dr Helen Veeroo (MClinDent, MOrth, FOrth RCS Edin): Consultant Specialist Orthodontist managing Invisalign and fixed brace cases that form part of the smile makeover sequence. No waiting lists, and Helen personally attends every appointment.
  • Periodontics — Dr Mital Patel (MClinDent Perio, MPerio RCS Ed): gum disease treatment, gum contouring, and soft tissue management to create the ideal gum architecture for the final cosmetic result. Active periodontal disease is also identified and treated before any cosmetic work begins.
  • Oral Surgery — Mr Dipesh Patel (BDS Lond, MFDS RCS Ed, MOral Surg): Consultant Oral Surgeon managing implant placement, extractions of non-restorable teeth within the smile plan, and any bone grafting required prior to implant treatment.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where do I start? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

A smile makeover consultation is the right first step. We will assess your teeth, gums, and bite, discuss what you like and dislike about your current smile, and explain what is realistically achievable. You will leave with a clear treatment plan, a sequenced timeline, and transparent costs. There is no obligation to proceed, and we will never recommend treatment that is not clinically appropriate.

How long does a smile makeover take? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

It depends entirely on what is involved. A straightforward bonding makeover can be completed in a single long appointment. A plan involving orthodontics, implants, and veneers may take twelve to eighteen months. The consultation will give you a realistic timeline based on your specific treatment needs.

Should I whiten my teeth before getting veneers or bonding? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Yes — whitening should always be completed before final cosmetic restorations are placed. The shade of composite bonding, veneers, and crowns is set at the time of manufacture and cannot be changed afterwards. If you whiten after having restorations made, your natural teeth will brighten but your restorations will not, creating a visible mismatch. Whitening first means the restoration shade can be matched to your bright, finished smile.

Do I need to see a specialist, or can a general dentist do my smile makeover? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Many smile makeovers can be delivered entirely by a skilled general dentist. Specialist involvement becomes important when the plan includes complex restorative work, implants, orthodontics, or significant gum treatment — cases where the clinical stakes are higher and the margin for error smaller. At Conway House, specialist input is available for exactly those cases, and your general dentist will refer you within the practice seamlessly when appropriate.

How much does a smile makeover cost? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Cost varies considerably depending on the treatments involved. A simple bonding makeover may start from a few hundred pounds; a comprehensive plan involving orthodontics, implants, and veneers will be a more significant investment. We provide clear, itemised pricing at your consultation with no surprises. Flexible payment options, including 0% finance subject to status, are available to help spread the cost.
