Specialist orthodontic care for children and adults — with no waiting lists, and a Consultant Orthodontist at every appointment.

A straight, well-aligned smile is about more than appearance. The position of your teeth affects how you bite, how you clean, and how other dental treatments perform. Crooked or crowded teeth are harder to clean, more prone to wear, and can create problems with the jaw that worsen over time.

At Conway House Dental Practice, orthodontic treatment is led by Dr Helen Veeroo — a Consultant and Specialist Orthodontist who has worked in Buckinghamshire since 2010 and holds some of the highest postgraduate qualifications in her field. Whether you are a parent seeking care for your child or an adult considering straightening your teeth for the first time, Helen provides comprehensive, specialist-led treatment that goes well beyond what a general dentist offering simple tooth straightening can deliver.

We regularly welcome patients from Marlow, Beaconsfield and High Wycombe, both directly and through referral from other dental practices across the region. Your consultation will be with Helen herself — and so will every appointment that follows.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the growth and development of the jaws and teeth. It addresses irregularities of the teeth and bite, and associated facial problems. Orthodontic treatment uses fixed and removable appliances to correct these issues in both adults and children, improving the bite and appearance of the teeth, enhancing confidence, and — in many cases — facilitating the provision of other dental treatments.

The word orthodontic comes from the Greek “ortho” meaning straight and “dentic” meaning related to teeth. A specialist orthodontist is a dentist who has undertaken at least three further years of postgraduate training in orthodontics and is registered as a specialist with the General Dental Council — a designation that is separate from, and additional to, general dental registration.

Dr Helen Veeroo: Consultant and Specialist Orthodontist

Dr Helen Veeroo holds the qualifications BDS (Hons), MClinDent, MFDS, MOrth, and FOrth RCS Edin — postgraduate degrees and fellowship-level qualifications that represent the highest tier of specialist orthodontic training. She is a Consultant Orthodontist, a title that reflects not only her specialist registration but her extensive experience in treating complex cases across both NHS and private settings.

Helen has worked in Buckinghamshire since 2010 and is deeply familiar with the clinical needs and expectations of patients across Marlow, Beaconsfield and High Wycombe. She treats both children and adults, from straightforward alignment cases to complex multidisciplinary treatments requiring coordination with oral surgery, periodontics, and restorative dentistry.

There are no waiting lists to begin treatment, and Helen will see you personally at every visit. This continuity of care is something that patients consistently value — particularly those who have previously experienced the fragmented care of practices where junior staff carry out the majority of appointments.

TREATMENT

What Your Orthodontic Consultation Covers

Following a thorough consultation, Helen will discuss all the treatment options available and provide detailed information including:

  • The benefits of treatment and what realistic outcomes look like for your specific case.
  • The typical length of treatment and what to expect at each stage.
  • The full costs involved, with no hidden fees.
  • The different brace options suitable for your teeth and lifestyle.
  • How wearing a brace may affect your day-to-day life during treatment.
  • Retention — how we protect your results after treatment is complete.

Treatment packages include retainers and ongoing support to help you maintain your new smile after braces are removed or aligners are completed. Helen will never recommend treatment that is not in your best clinical interest, and will always give you an honest assessment of what is and is not achievable.

Orthodontic Treatments Available at Conway House

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces use brackets bonded to the teeth and connected by a wire that is progressively tightened to move teeth into the correct position. They offer precise control over tooth movement and remain the most effective option for complex cases, bite correction, and significant misalignment. Helen offers aesthetic fixed brace options using tooth-coloured or ceramic brackets for patients who prefer a less visible appliance.

Clear Aligners (Invisalign®)

Clear aligners are removable, transparent trays that move teeth gradually through a planned sequence of stages. They are a popular choice among adults who want effective straightening without the visibility of fixed braces. At Conway House, Invisalign treatment is also available through our general dental team for suitable cases — and Helen works alongside that team where specialist input is needed for more complex aligner cases.

Removable Appliances

In some cases — particularly for younger patients whose jaws are still developing — removable appliances can guide jaw growth and tooth position before fixed braces become appropriate. Helen is experienced in the full range of functional and removable appliances and will advise clearly on which approach is most appropriate at each stage of a patient’s development.

Retainers

Retainers are an essential part of any orthodontic outcome. Without retention, teeth will shift back towards their original position over time. All treatment packages at Conway House include retainers, and Helen will advise you on the most appropriate type — fixed, removable, or both — and the wearing regime that will protect your result long term.

Before Treatment Begins: The Importance of a Healthy Foundation

Before starting any orthodontic treatment, Helen carries out a thorough assessment of your oral health. Moving teeth through bone that is compromised by gum disease, untreated decay, or inadequate previous dental work can lead to root damage, poor treatment outcomes, and instability once braces are removed. At Conway House, we address any underlying concerns first — and as a full-service practice, we can treat them in-house.

Conditions we may need to address before orthodontic treatment can begin include:

  • Gum disease — active periodontitis causes bone loss, which significantly increases the risk of root resorption and poor tooth stability during orthodontic movement. Where gum disease is identified, Dr Mital Patel, our Specialist in Periodontics, will stabilise your gum health before treatment begins.
  • Dental decay — cavities must be restored before brace placement, as brackets placed over decaying teeth can accelerate damage and make restoration harder. We assess and treat any decay as part of your pre-treatment preparation.
  • Restorative concerns — old, failing, or planned restorations should be considered in the context of your orthodontic plan. Mr Ashok Vijayakumar, our Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, works alongside Helen on cases where pre- or post-orthodontic restorative work is needed to achieve the best overall result.
  • Impacted or retained teeth — unerupted canines and other impacted teeth sometimes require surgical exposure before orthodontic traction can bring them into the arch. Mr Dipesh Patel, our Consultant Oral Surgeon, performs these procedures in-house as part of a coordinated treatment plan.

If we identify any concerns during your assessment, we will always explain your options clearly and will not begin orthodontic treatment until the conditions are right for a safe and successful outcome.

Complete Your Smile: Combining Orthodontics with Other Treatments

Orthodontics is often the centrepiece of a wider smile transformation. Straight teeth provide the ideal canvas for cosmetic and restorative treatments — and at Conway House, the full range of those treatments is available in-house, planned and coordinated around your orthodontic timeline.

  • Teeth Whitening — one of the most popular combinations. Straightening your teeth first creates an even, aligned surface that responds beautifully to professional whitening. We recommend whitening after brace removal or aligner completion, once your retainers are fitted and your new smile is stable. We offer Enlighten and White Dental Beauty whitening systems, and will match the shade to any planned restorations for a consistent result.
  • Restorative Dentistry — chips, worn edges, uneven tooth shapes, or older fillings that become more noticeable once teeth are straightened can be addressed by Mr Ashok Vijayakumar, our Specialist in Restorative Dentistry. Composite bonding and porcelain veneers are often used after orthodontic treatment to perfect the shape, size, and surface of teeth — completing the smile in a way that braces alone cannot.
  • Dental Implants — patients who are missing teeth often need orthodontic treatment to create or optimise the space before an implant can be placed. Helen works directly with our implant team to plan the sequence of treatment so that the implant is positioned for the best long-term functional and aesthetic result.
  • Oral Surgery — some orthodontic cases require extraction of teeth to create space, or surgical exposure of impacted teeth to allow traction. Mr Dipesh Patel, our Consultant Oral Surgeon, performs these procedures in-house as part of the integrated treatment plan — meaning no external referrals, no delays, and no loss of clinical continuity.
  • Periodontics — patients with a history of gum disease require particularly careful monitoring during orthodontic treatment, as tooth movement can affect periodontal health. Dr Mital Patel, our Specialist in Periodontics, works alongside Helen on these cases to ensure gum health is protected throughout treatment and in retention.
  • Paediatric Dentistry — for younger patients, Helen often works in conjunction with our Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry to ensure that any child-specific dental concerns — from decay prevention to anxiety management — are addressed alongside their orthodontic care.

Not sure where to start? Your consultation with Helen will help you understand all your options and build a treatment plan that suits both your smile goals and your budget — whether orthodontics is the first step or part of a wider plan.

Why Choose a Full-Service Practice for Your Orthodontic Treatment?

Many orthodontic providers offer braces or aligners and nothing else. At Conway House Dental Practice, orthodontics sits within a comprehensive specialist team — which means that whatever your case involves, the expertise to manage it is already here.

Orthodontic cases that touch on oral surgery, implant planning, periodontal management, or restorative treatment are common. When those specialties are under the same roof, treatment is planned more intelligently, sequenced more efficiently, and delivered with complete clinical continuity. There are no gaps between providers, no miscommunications between referral letters, and no delays waiting for hospital appointments.

  • Consultant Orthodontist with the highest postgraduate qualifications in her field treating every patient.
  • No waiting lists — treatment can begin promptly once the pre-treatment assessment is complete.
  • Helen personally present at every appointment throughout your treatment.
  • In-house oral surgery for extractions and surgical exposures.
  • Specialist Periodontics to manage gum health before and during treatment.
  • Specialist Restorative Dentistry for post-orthodontic finishing treatments.
  • Teeth whitening available immediately after brace removal.
  • Flexible payment options including 0% finance (subject to status).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old for orthodontic treatment? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

No. Orthodontic treatment is suitable for adults of any age, provided the teeth and supporting bone are healthy. Adult orthodontics has become increasingly common — particularly with the availability of less visible options such as clear aligners and ceramic braces. Helen treats a significant number of adult patients and will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable and how long treatment is likely to take.

What is the difference between a specialist orthodontist and a dentist offering braces? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

A specialist orthodontist holds at least three years of additional postgraduate training in orthodontics beyond their dental degree and is registered as a specialist with the General Dental Council. A general dentist offering tooth straightening has completed a short course. The clinical difference is significant — particularly for complex cases, bite correction, jaw problems, or treatment requiring coordination with surgery or implants. At Conway House, all orthodontic treatment is led by Dr Helen Veeroo, a Consultant and Specialist Orthodontist.

How long does orthodontic treatment take? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Treatment length varies considerably depending on the complexity of the case. Simple alignment cases may be completed in six to twelve months. More complex cases involving bite correction, jaw development, or multidisciplinary treatment can take two years or more. Helen will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation, based on a thorough assessment of your teeth and bite — not a marketing promise.

Do braces hurt? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Some discomfort is normal in the days following brace placement or adjustment, as teeth begin to move. This is typically a dull aching sensation and is manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. It settles within a few days. Fixed braces can also cause initial rubbing of the lips and cheeks, which most patients adapt to within a couple of weeks. Helen will always ensure you leave each appointment with clear advice on managing any discomfort.

Can I have braces if I have gum disease? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Not until the gum disease is fully controlled. Moving teeth through bone affected by active periodontitis risks accelerating bone loss and creating long-term instability. At Conway House, Dr Mital Patel, our Specialist in Periodontics, can treat and stabilise your gum health before orthodontic treatment begins. Helen and Dr Patel work collaboratively on these cases to ensure the safest and most effective outcome.

What happens after my braces come off? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Retention is the most important stage of orthodontic treatment — and the one most often overlooked at practices where aftercare is minimal. Without retainers, teeth will begin to shift back towards their original position. At Conway House, retainers are included in your treatment package, and Helen will advise you on the type and wearing regime that best protects your result. This is also the ideal point to consider teeth whitening or any restorative finishing treatments, such as composite bonding, to complete your smile.

Can I have teeth whitening during orthodontic treatment? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

We recommend whitening after treatment is complete rather than during, for two reasons: whitening trays cannot be used over braces, and whitening during aligner treatment can create uneven results as parts of the tooth surface are covered. Once your braces are removed and retainers are fitted, professional whitening with Enlighten or White Dental Beauty gives even, predictable results across your newly aligned smile.

My child has been told they need orthodontic treatment. When should we start? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

The right time to start depends on the nature of the problem. Some bite and jaw issues are best intercepted early — before the permanent teeth have fully erupted — when jaw growth can still be guided. Others are best treated once all the adult teeth are present. Helen treats patients from childhood through adulthood and will advise clearly on the most appropriate timing for your child’s specific situation. An early consultation, even if treatment does not begin immediately, gives Helen the opportunity to monitor development and intervene at the optimal time.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost in Marlow and Beaconsfield? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Cost depends on the complexity of the case, the type of appliance used, and the length of treatment. Helen provides clear, itemised pricing at your consultation with no hidden fees. All treatment packages include retainers. Flexible payment options are available, including 0% finance subject to status, to help spread the cost of treatment over a period that suits you.
