Expert assessment and removal by a Consultant Oral Surgeon — with sedation available for a comfortable, stress-free experience.

Wisdom teeth cause more anxiety than almost any other dental issue — and for good reason. They arrive late, often without enough room, and when they cause problems, those problems can be significant. But in the right hands, the assessment and removal of problematic wisdom teeth is a well-managed, straightforward process.

At Conway House Dental Practice, wisdom tooth cases are assessed and treated by Mr Dipesh Patel, our Consultant Oral Surgeon. Mr Patel has dedicated his career to oral surgery and brings the surgical precision and clinical judgement that complex wisdom tooth extractions specifically require. We see patients from Marlow, Beaconsfield and High Wycombe directly, and accept referrals from dental practices across the region.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop, typically emerging between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have no issues with their wisdom teeth, others experience problems when there is not enough space for them to come through correctly.

This can lead to impacted wisdom teeth — teeth that grow at an angle, become stuck under the gum, or partially erupt and create a pocket that traps food and bacteria. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause pain, swelling, infection, and damage to the neighbouring teeth. In some cases, removal is the most appropriate course of action. Regular dental check-ups help monitor wisdom teeth and determine whether treatment is needed.

Why You Might Need a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

A wisdom tooth extraction may be necessary if your wisdom teeth are causing discomfort or complications. Common reasons include:

  • Impaction — the tooth cannot emerge properly due to insufficient space, causing it to press against the adjacent molar or lie at an angle within the jaw.
  • Infection (pericoronitis) — a partially erupted wisdom tooth creates a flap of gum tissue that traps bacteria, leading to repeated or persistent infection, pain, and swelling.
  • Decay — wisdom teeth are positioned at the far back of the mouth and are difficult to clean effectively, making them particularly prone to cavities that are hard to restore.
  • Gum disease — the area around wisdom teeth is vulnerable to periodontal problems, which can affect the health of the neighbouring second molar if left untreated.
  • Damage to neighbouring teeth — a wisdom tooth pushing against the adjacent molar can cause root damage, crowding, or decay in an otherwise healthy tooth.

If your wisdom teeth are causing any of these issues — or if they have been identified as a potential problem during a routine check-up — an assessment with Mr Patel will give you a clear, honest picture of your options.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions at Conway House

Mr Dipesh Patel holds the qualifications BDS (Lond), MFDS RCS Ed, PG DIP (PDC), and MOral Surg — postgraduate surgical qualifications attained after years of dedicated training in oral surgery at King’s College London. He performs both straightforward and surgically complex wisdom tooth removals, including teeth that are deeply impacted, close to the inferior alveolar nerve, or positioned in a way that requires careful surgical planning.

Before any extraction, Mr Patel reviews your X-rays and, where the anatomy warrants it, uses CBCT 3D imaging to assess the precise position of the tooth and its relationship to the nerve. This level of pre-surgical planning significantly reduces the risk of complications and allows him to choose the safest and most efficient surgical approach.

All wisdom tooth extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic. Most patients find the procedure is far more comfortable than they anticipated — the anaesthetic is effective and Mr Patel’s technique is gentle and precise. For patients who feel anxious, we offer both intravenous (IV) sedation and oral sedation options in partnership with Sedation Solutions, allowing you to choose the level of comfort that suits you.

What to Expect After Removal

Recovery after a straightforward wisdom tooth extraction typically takes seven to ten days. Surgical extractions of deeply impacted teeth may take a little longer. Mr Patel will give you clear, specific aftercare instructions, and our team is available if you have any concerns during your recovery.

  • Some swelling and discomfort in the first two to three days is normal and managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Keeping the area clean with gentle salt water rinses helps the socket heal.
  • Avoid smoking, strenuous exercise, and alcohol for at least 48 hours.
  • Dry socket — where the healing blood clot dislodges — is the most common complication, occurring in a small percentage of cases. Contact us promptly if pain suddenly worsens a few days after the extraction.

When Specialist Dentistry Is Relevant to Your Wisdom Teeth

Oral Surgery — The Expertise Behind Every Extraction

Wisdom tooth removal at Conway House is not a routine extraction handed to a general dentist. Every case is assessed and performed by Mr Dipesh Patel, our dedicated Consultant Oral Surgeon. This matters most for impacted teeth near the inferior alveolar nerve, teeth with unusual root anatomy, or patients with medical histories that complicate surgical care. Mr Patel also accepts referrals from other practices for cases too complex to manage in a general dental setting.

Periodontics — Treating Gum Disease Around Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are a common site for pericoronitis and localised gum disease, and the infection that develops around a partially erupted wisdom tooth can spread to affect the gum health of the adjacent second molar. Where significant gum disease is identified — either before or after extraction — Dr Mital Patel, our Specialist in Periodontics, can treat and monitor the periodontal condition to ensure the neighbouring teeth remain healthy.

Orthodontics — When Wisdom Teeth Contribute to Crowding

The relationship between wisdom teeth and dental crowding is nuanced — not all crowding is caused by wisdom teeth, and removing them does not always resolve it. However, in cases where wisdom teeth are actively pushing against existing teeth or where orthodontic treatment is being planned, extraction timing matters. Dr Helen Veeroo, our Consultant Orthodontist, works with Mr Patel on these cases to plan the correct sequence, ensuring that any orthodontic gains are not undermined by retained wisdom teeth pressing from behind.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed if they are not causing problems? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Not necessarily. Wisdom teeth that are fully erupted, correctly positioned, and easy to clean do not need to be removed simply because they are wisdom teeth. The decision to remove them is based on clinical evidence — symptoms, X-ray findings, and risk to neighbouring teeth. Mr Patel will give you an honest assessment and will not recommend removal unless there is a clear clinical reason.

Will I need to go to hospital for a wisdom tooth removal? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Most wisdom tooth extractions — including surgical removals of impacted teeth — can be carried out comfortably in our High Wycombe practice. Hospital treatment is generally reserved for patients with significant medical complexities. Choosing a Consultant Oral Surgeon in a well-equipped private practice means faster access, a more comfortable environment, and consistent care from the same clinician throughout.

Is wisdom tooth removal painful? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and should be painless. You may feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain. Sedation is available if you are anxious. Mild soreness and swelling in the days following is normal and settles with rest and over-the-counter pain relief. Mr Patel’s surgical technique is designed to minimise trauma to the surrounding tissue, which helps keep post-operative discomfort to a minimum.

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in High Wycombe? right washed out crimson circle arrow down washed out crimson circle arrow

Cost depends on the complexity of the case — a straightforward erupted wisdom tooth is less involved than a deeply impacted surgical removal. We provide clear pricing at your consultation before any procedure takes place. Flexible payment options, including 0% finance subject to status, are available to help spread the cost.
