Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the growth and development of the jaws and teeth, including irregularities of teeth and bite, and associated facial problems. Orthodontic treatment uses fixed and/or removable braces to correct these problems in adults and children.
The word orthodontic translates to “Ortho” which means ‘straight’ and “dontic” means ‘related to teeth.’ A specialist orthodontist is a dentist who has undertaken further training of at least 3 years and is registered as a specialist by the General Dental Council.
Orthodontic treatment will improve the bite and appearance of teeth, improving confidence and, in some cases, facilitating the provision of other dental treatment.
