Invisalign High Wycombe

If you have a deep desire for straight teeth without having to wear unattractive metal braces or wires, invisible braces is what you should prefer.

They offer you the choice of wearing temporary and an invisible appliance giving you a natural look and simultaneously straightening your teeth. You are required to wear each aligner/brace for 1-2 weeks and shift onto the next one, so your teeth become straight gradually and progressively.

Invisalign Logo

This is often a favourable alternative for adults who have professional careers and don’t feel comfortable wearing unsightly ‘train track’ braces for months and want the flexibility of being able to take them out for special occasions.

The technology behind invisible braces is highly advanced and often gives patients a much shorter treatment time, depending on their individual cases and what they want to achieve.

Indications For Clear Braces

Common reasons for having orthodontic treatment are:

  • To improve the appearance of the teeth and face.
  • To improve the health of the teeth and gums, i.e. straight teeth are easier to keep clean
  • To improve function, i.e., misplaced teeth can accelerate tooth wear
  • To facilitate restorative treatment, i.e. implant, veneers, crown and bridgework.
  • Combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) in adult patients who have finished growth.

Using Braces As An Adult

The demand for clear braces for adult braces is increasing, especially when now we can offer more aesthetically pleasing appliances.

Age is not a limiting factor for having orthodontic treatment; however, you must have a full comprehensive consultation before commencing the treatment to ensure your dental health is stable.

Types Of Clear Braces

There are three types of clear braces available for you. These include:

  • Ceramic Brackets- Clear ceramic braces are similar to metal braces, the only difference being that they use tooth-coloured material, giving them a natural look and hence, sometimes referred to as clear metal braces. These are non-staining and perfectly blend with your tooth colour.
  • Inside Braces- These are attached behind the tooth and hence are not visible from outside. They provide support to your teeth from the backside and ultimately lead to their straightening.
  • Clear Aligners/Invisalign Braces- Invisalign aligners are the most popular type of clear braces which includes a series of aligners personalised according to your tooth structure, where you have to wear them regularly and shift from one to another based on tooth contour. These are popularly called invisible braces because one cannot differentiate if you are wearing these from outside.
  • Damon Clear Braces- They are a recent advancement in the domain of clear braces and combine the tieless braces with high technology archwires. They are relatively more comfortable and better suited as compared to traditional braces.

Aligner Insertion

  • Each teeth aligner is trimmed by hand so if you find a rough area this can be gently polished using a nail file.
  • Each aligner is engraved with the stage number on the molar teeth (e.g. U02 meaning upper aligner number 2).
  • Ensure the aligner is seated down correctly over all of your teeth. Do not bite your aligners into position as this may damage them.
  • You can also use clear rubber bands for braces that keep the archwire tied to the bracket slot and align your teeth in a particular direction.
  • Always put the aligners into the box provided if you are not wearing them. Placing them into your pocket or tissue will only result in the aligners being lost or damaged, which will incur a replacement charge.

Post Application Changes

Your teeth will likely be tender for 3-5 days each time you progress to the next aligner. If necessary, painkillers such as the ones you usually take for headaches may help (always read the instructions).

Your speech may be different over the first few days after the fit of the initial aligner. Practice speaking with the aligner in place so your speech will return to normal.

You may also find you produce extra saliva. This is physiological as the mouth will perceive it as a foreign body and will take time to adapt to it. However, you don’t have to worry about this; it will quickly pass.

Care Of Braces

You are required to wear your aligners for a minimum of 23 hours per day. You must follow these instructions for the treatment to work effectively.

You will be able to eat normally. The aligner will need to be removed for eating and drinking. If you have attachments (discrete white filling beads on the teeth to help the tooth movements), then it is best to avoid hard and sticky foods to prevent them from breaking and complicating the treatment progress.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush your teeth three times a day for at least 3 minutes using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use a daily alcohol-free fluoride mouthwash at least 20 min after brushing

Aligner Care

  • Clean your aligner using your toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste every time you take it in and out.
  • Once a week, use RETAINER BRITE -follow the instructions on the box.

Follow Up

You will need regular appointments (usually every 4-6 weeks) during treatment to monitor the progress.

If you lose or damage your aligner, please call the Practice immediately for an appointment. Please note that there will be a charge and possible delay of the treatment.

Advantages Of Clear Braces

Benefits of this type of treatment include

  • Short Time Required- Having your teeth straightened in generally shorter duration as compared to traditional metallic braces
  • Improved Compliance- It is better for the patients as they get their flaws corrected without any unsightly metallic braces usage.
  • Straighter Teeth-  They give you straight and perfectly aligned teeth on your top and bottom jaws. You can also enjoy the benefit of your braces being hidden, making you feel less self-conscious when socialising or speaking in public.
  • Removable- With removable devices, you can also take them out to eat or for special occasions, so they fit around your lifestyle.
  • Better oral Health- It is important to remember that straighter teeth are healthier teeth. When your bite is aligned correctly, and your teeth are straightened, there are fewer gaps and areas for food to get trapped and plaque to build upon the teeth, causing decay. In that sense, invisible orthodontics is a long-term investment in your oral health.
